3. Overview of the Project NURRU’s goal is to increase the benefits derived from use of demand-driven, action oriented research results in initiatives on poverty eradication and sustainable socio-economic development. Outputs from Phase I research have been published and disseminated through workshops, working papers and policy briefs. Description of services Investigated the channels through which NURRU research outputs can be effectively disseminated. Designed and collected data at three different levels namely desk research, interviews and field surveys. A Dissemination Catalogue and Indicators for Monitoring and Evaluation of Dissemination and Use of Research Results were developed.
ü Natural Resource Management 1. Overview of the Project During the first study “A Review of Existing Knowledge of Wetlands on Lake Kyoga basin with a Focus on people’s Livelihoods” that was carried out for DFID/NRSP in March 2001, it was not possible to quantify outputs from past and present projects in relation to people’s livelihoods. The impact of these projects on wetland resources was also not assessed. Furthermore, constraints that lead to failure of some projects were not studied. Description of services Literature review of secondary data, Survey design, consultations with relevant officials from the districts and the affected communities, data collection and analysis. 2. Overview of the Project NRSP’s research in Eastern Africa is now delivering results that are relevant to expressed areas of demand. At the same time these results need to be communicated to a range of stakeholders and actors. This requires a range of products that suit the requirements of the different stake holders. In addition to the need for a range of products, the form (or forms) that these products should take has to be considered as well as the media most suitable for the different stakeholders. Description of services A review of literature on projects related to NR management, and interviews held with selected stakeholders including researchers, research users, NGOs and policy makers, data collection and analysis. 3. Overview of the Project A multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional team funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) Crop Protection Programme (CPP) carried out the project. It was aimed at informing pest management research and dissemination strategy, through an analysis of farmer pest management decision-making processes and associated farmer-technology interfaces in a number of priority cropping systems and geographical areas where CPP is active. Description of services Selected participatory farm management decision tools. Developed open-ended interview guidelines for eliciting information on pest management perceptions and decision processes with individual farmers. Conducted fieldwork with trained and untrained farmers. Conducted brainstorming analysis workshops of field data.
4. Overview of the Project Research led by the Uganda National Banana Research Programme (UNBRP) suggested a number of interrelated factors that have contributed to decline in production. This study aimed to review the knowledge on banana research and uptake in Uganda and carry out an analysis of stakeholders and their involvement in banana research and development to identify constraints and opportunities within the process of technology uptake. Specifically, the study was to identify the constraints to adoption of technologies for management of pest and diseases of banana based cropping systems in Uganda. Description of services Planned and developed methodology with participants from key stakeholders. Reviewed literature and held consultative meetings with stakeholders. |
